The Yates County Youth Bureau has partnered with Safe Harbors of the Finger Lakes Inc. to spearhead this campaign for the community. Alicia Avellaneda, Yates County Youth Bureau Director and Jannine Phillips, Yates Program Coordinator for Safe Harbors of the Finger Lakes will be the coordinators for this program.
Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children and Human Trafficking are prevalent issues in New York State, and are occurring in every neighborhood, including rural communities. Traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to control other people for the purpose of engaging in commercial sex or forcing them to provide labor services against their will. The average age of children who are groomed into trafficking situations are between 12-17 years of age. However, it has been documented with younger children.
Using funds from the state allocation, the
Anti-Trafficking Program will provide community awareness and outreach as well as strategies for agencies on identifying and supporting survivors. The program will also provide case coordination and advocacy for youth who have been the subject of commercial sexual exploitation.
The program will be providing its first community awareness event at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 9 in the Yates County Auditorium, 417 Liberty St., Penn Yan. The event will include education on CSEC and human trafficking, strategies on how to identify and support survivors, and a showing of the film “Chosen.”
