Two Weekends!

May 12, 13 and 19, 20

Saturdays  11-5, Sundays  1-5

Middlesex, NY.

The Folk Art Guild artisans are kicking off the 2018 craft season with an invitation to visit the workshops and the East Hill Gallery for two weekends in May.  Dates and times are Saturday and Sunday May 12, 13, and May 19, 20, 11-5 on the Saturdays, and 1-5 on the Sundays. This on-site event gives friends and neighbors a chance to peek at and to purchase the distinctive craft work in time for graduation and wedding season gift giving.  Hosting this “at home” allows for touring the studios where the creation happens, and the opportunity to speak with the makers in their own space.

The main shops these days are the pottery, woodshop, and clothing design.  The pottery studio is prolific, and has much variety of functional and decorative ware to offer.   In spring, the potters produce planters and birdbaths to decorate outside the home. The staples of serving at the table are available in choices of glaze:  mugs, bowls, platters and casseroles abound. There will be a wood firing shortly before the Open Studios, so pots fresh from the wood kiln will be featured.

The woodworkers also focus on serving food with flair:  Salad bowls, plates in native woods, including some huge walnut presentation platters will be up in the Woodshop. These oversize pieces require considerable skill in craftsmanship.  They make an impressive centerpiece, brimming with fruit. Cutting boards, both the end-grain chopping style, and the thinner handled ones in two sizes make their appearance. There are gifts in wood from every price range—from backscratchers costing less than $15, to an elegant cherry dovetailed treasure box priced at several hundred, all would be appreciated.

The clothing designers are fashioning new spring jackets in two classic shapes: kimono and one-button swing style. They are interpreted in fabrics ranging from tropical weight wool to brushed cottons to gorgeous textured raw silk.   You will see some accent or piecework on each one using handmade textiles, such as vintage kimono wool, Indonesian ikats, or shibori embellishments. One of the designers, Claudia Welbourne, said, “Dresses are popping up everywhere you look this spring and we are no exception; we’ll have wrap dresses in a shirtwaist style with swingy circle skirts done in colorful lightweight cotton and voile prints. “

The Guild’s handmade clothing will be on view in the East Hill Gallery, a special airy space for display of craftwork, be they textiles, pottery, or wooden furniture.  These two season preview weekends will allow a glimpse into the wide variety of creative output of this unique community, which has made its home in Middlesex for over 50 years, and has become a destination for art and craft lovers.

About the Rochester Folk Art Guild

A not-for-profit arts community and educational institution, the Guild began its work in crafts more than 60 years ago.  Located on a 350-acre farm in New York’s Finger Lakes Region, the Guild has grown to receive worldwide recognition for its handcrafts, which have found their place in museums, private collections, shops, and galleries through the United States and abroad.  The Guild also offers workshops for adults and conducts educational outreach programs for children.  Its Apprenticeship Program is designed for young people who are searching for a practical, hands-on approach to learning and living.  Working alongside experienced master craftspeople, apprentices learn proficiency in a craft and how to live alongside others in a community setting. Over the past dozen years, the Guild has offered an annual Craft Weekend in July for all ages.
